Getting to Basilicata might seem a bit tricky at first, but don’t worry — it’s easier than it looks, and we’ve got you covered step by step.
By plane: the closest airports
Basilicata does not have its own airport, but it is well connected to two major international hubs in Southern Italy:
-
Naples International Airport (Campania)
-
Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (Apulia)
Both airports are served by many international and low-cost airlines and are commonly used by Erasmus students.
From Naples
From Naples, you have several reliable options to reach Basilicata and especially Potenza:
-
Train (recommended)
You can travel with Trenitalia, usually with one change at Salerno, arriving at Potenza Centrale.
This is a safe and widely used option. -
Bus
Companies such as Itabus, Miccolis and FlixBus offer direct or semi-direct connections at affordable prices.
From Bari
From Bari, buses are generally the most efficient solution to reach Basilicata.
Important tip
We strongly recommend avoiding trains operated by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane. While they do connect Bari to Basilicata, the service is often slow and unreliable, especially if you’re travelling with luggage.
Our advice for Erasmus students
-
Choose Naples or Bari as your arrival airport
-
Prefer Trenitalia trains or long-distance buses
